Faces of Leicester

FacesofLeicesterTestI am currently working on a series of portraits for a proposed exhibition entitled ‘Faces of Leicester’. I was inspired by the recent August Sander photography exhibition at New Walk Gallery, Leicester and decided I would love to document a cross-section of people living in the city by painting a variety of faces. I want to paint them all the same size and format and then frame them the same too. I want to paint all ages, cultures and professions. So far I have either painted, or started to paint… ‘Dave’ who used to run the Boardroom skatepark; ‘Fatima’, originally from Kenya and now raising four of her own children (plus  a few foster ones) and doing a brilliant job of it; ‘Malcolm’ and ‘Joe’ from Malcolm Murphy Hairdressing; ‘Chris’, who lives in Leicester and works for Charnwood Borough Council; ‘John’, one of the Hussein brothers, and restaurant entrepreneur; ‘Ady’, whose parents were originally from Jamaica, and who is a Western Park local hero; and ‘Nanny Rose’, who travelled to Leicester from India – on her own aged 25 – in the 60s and is a remarkable character…

So, as you can see, the list is already diverse but I would like it to be even more so. I’ll keep you posted…
